Djokovic Issues Warning to Jannik Sinner: Suspension Will Hang Over Him Like a "Shadow"

Novak Djokovic has cautioned Jannik Sinner that his three-month doping suspension will persist over his career like a "cloud" – while also questioning the scheduling of the sanction last year.

Details of the Suspension

The Italian player served a three-month prohibition in February 2025 after the global anti-doping body approved his account that a banned anabolic steroid, clostebol, had entered his system accidentally.

"That cloud will follow him just as the Covid controversy will follow me, for the remainder of our respective careers," Djokovic stated in an interview on Piers Morgan: Uncensored.

"It's just something that, it was so significant, and when that happens, with time it may lessen, but I don't think it will disappear. There's always going to be a certain group of people that will always try to bring that forward."

The Champion's Viewpoint

Djokovic expressed belief that Sinner, his frequent training companion, "didn't do it on purpose", but he proceeded to question how the player arranged to serve his time without sitting out any major tournaments.

"The absence of openness, the inconsistency, the convenience [of] the ban coming between the slams, so he doesn't miss out the others – it simply appeared highly unusual," Djokovic added.

Wider Player Reactions

"I really don't like how the situation was managed and it was evident numerous fellow athletes, across both tours, who had comparable circumstances voicing their concerns publicly and complaining that it was a preferable treatment."
