United Nations Lifts Penalties on President of Syria Prior to Presidential Visit
United Nations Security Council members approved to a US resolution ending penalties on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his White House visit the coming week.
He became transitional president after leading an insurgent campaign that ousted Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, bringing to a close over a decade of domestic strife.
Washington's ambassador Mike Waltz at the United Nations stated the United Nations delivered "a powerful diplomatic message" that acknowledged Syria entered "a different period" since Assad was deposed.
Previously, he faced UN sanctions while commanding the Islamist group the HTS movement, previously associated with the extremist organization. America delisted the organization from the catalog of global extremist entities in July.
Further Restrictions Lifted
The UN also removed sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.
Syria's foreign minister welcomed the removal of the sanctions, posting on social media: "The nation shows its gratitude to Washington and to friendly nations for backing of Syria and its people."
Forthcoming Presidential Visit
The Syrian leader's Washington trip on Monday comes after US President Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa had made "good progress" working toward stability to the war-torn country.
Both presidents held discussions for the first time this past May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia during a visit to the region.
Subsequent to that discussion, Trump portrayed him as a "resilient figure" possessing a "powerful background".
His former militant faction was al-Qaeda's affiliate within Syria until he severed ties during 2016.
Previous US Visit
This week's diplomatic engagement is not the president's debut journey to the US during this period. During September, he became the initial Syrian president to address the United Nations gathering at UN headquarters in almost 60 years.
Throughout his presentation, he stated the country had been "restoring its proper position among the nations of the world" and expressed solidarity toward Gaza's residents.
