World Health Organization Confronts Significant Staff Cuts Following US Financial Withdrawal

This international health organization revealed plans to cut its workforce by almost a quarter – amounting to more than two thousand jobs – before the middle of 2026.

Funding Shortfall Triggers Major Restructuring

The decision comes following the United States, formerly the organization's biggest donor, withdrew financial support previously this period.

Washington had been responsible for approximately eighteen percent of the organization's overall funding, causing a substantial financial gap.

Projected Staff Reductions

Based on organizational projections, the workforce is expected to drop from nine thousand four hundred and one positions in January 2025 to around 7,030 by mid-2026.

The reduction of 2,371 positions comprises job cuts, employees retiring, and regular departures.

"The past year has been one of the toughest in WHO's history, as we have navigated a challenging but necessary journey of prioritisation and restructuring," stated the agency's leader.

Budget Gap Remains

The Geneva-based organization currently faces a funding shortfall of $1.06bn for the 2026-2027 period, amounting to nearly a quarter of its required budget.

This figure marks an improvement from a prior projected gap of 1.7 billion dollars reported in spring.

Not Included Funding

The budget projections exclude an additional 1.1 billion dollars in potential funding from current negotiations with multiple contributors.

The representative for the organization noted that the present unfunded part of the budget is in fact smaller than in previous years, crediting this to several factors:

  • Reduced overall budget
  • The launch of a fresh donor outreach campaign
  • An increase in member states' mandatory contributions

This restructuring initiative is currently approaching its completion, allowing the organization to move forward with a renewed structure.
